Ministry of Defence decided on Finland's accession to FAMOUS IA1 arrangement

Minister of Defence Antti Kaikkonen has authorised the Defence Forces to sign a FAMOUS IA1 arrangement document and a FAMOUS 1 project agreement.

By signing the arrangement document, the participating defence administrations of Finland, Belgium, Estonia, Greece, Germany, France, Spain, Denmark and Latvia will agree to support the FAMOUS 1 project, with the aim to jointly explore and develop armoured vehicles. In Finland, FAMOUS is closely linked to the project to develop the Army’s arctic mobility, which seeks to find a replacement to the existing fleet of tracked trucks that is becoming obsolete. The project aims to develop new technological solutions that will improve the performance of new and existing armoured vehicles.

- The security environment has changed and it is now more important than before to work together to develop the capabilities necessary for European defence and our national defence, says Minister Kaikkonen.

To implement the FAMOUS 1 project, detailed terms and conditions between defence administrations and the industrial consortium will be agreed on in the project agreement.

The overall value of the project agreement, without value added tax, is EUR 0.76 million. In addition, the European Commission is funding the FAMOUS 1 project with nine million euros.

The domestic employment effect will be about 25 person-years.
