Minister of Defence Haglund to attend Nato Summit in Wales

Minister of Defence Carl Haglund will participate in the Nato Summit on 4 to 5 September 2014 in Newport, Wales. Nato’s partner countries were also invited to the Summit. Finland’s delegation will be led by the President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö. During the Summit, two separate defence minister meetings will be arranged where also partner countries will be invited. Finland will attend both of the meetings where cooperation between Nato and partner countries will be discussed.

Minister of Defence Haglund will be a member of the delegation led by President Niinistö which will take part in the ISAF meeting, arranged as part of the Summit. The crisis-management operation ISAF will terminate at the end of this year. The situation in Afghanistan and the possibilities to support the country through the Resolute Support mission to advise, assist and train also after 2014 will be discussed. Finland is prepared to contribute to the mission.

During the Summit, Chief of Defence General Jarmo Lindberg who is in the Finnish delegation will sign the Host Nation Support Memorandum of Understanding between Finland and Nato. The Memorandum of Understanding is a framework document which provides the basis for agreeing on applicable, concrete Host Nation Support, in each case separately.
